‘Greening Radcliffe’ plans on course for Saturday March 19th  launch with some BIG statistics to consider!

The ‘Greening Radcliffe’ initiative is well into its planning stage for a whole village daytime launch at Grange Hall, central Radcliffe on Saturday March 19th, 10am to 2pm.

Every single club, organisation and group, Radcliffe schools and residents is being invited to contribute to a fun-day to bring  the whole idea of  collectively saving money,energy and natural resources together.  Doing the same things together,  Radcliffe households can reduce the village’s carbon footprint by very slightly changing their daily lives.

After a public meeting that attracted hundreds of residents, people are gearing up to ‘get a little greener’ in a very easy way.  The key is for residents to sign up to five or more of ten simple pledges to ‘Go Greener’ which were voted for at the public meeting.

Pledge cards will be distributed.  Each household will then be asked to tick off as many pledges as they can commit to and stick their marked up cards in a front window.  Between 14th and 28th May  a whole-village count-up of all pledge cards in windows will measure how much money should be saved through reduced gas, electricity and water used, and how Radcliffe’s carbon footprint has therefore been reduced. A household could save £192 or more every year.

The combined small efforts of 10,000 people, when added together, can make a huge difference in both cash and carbon terms.

Here are the top ten pledges agreed by residents at the meeting.

1. Turn thermostat down by 1 degree and put on a sweater – save £50-60 a year and 330kg of CO2
2. Walk or cycle if the journey is less that a mile – save £10+ a year, 22kg of CO2 ( AND get fitter at the same time!)
3. Turn off all inactive appliances and standbys – save £32 a year  and 130kg of CO2
4. Turn off lights when you leave a room – save £6 a year and 23kg of CO2
5. Turn off tap when brushing teeth and use a mug – save £11 and a massive 4230 litres of clean water!
6. Reduce toilet flush. Use a FREE water saving device, save £8 and 3480 litres of clean water and 2.4kg of CO2
7. Insulate water tank to 75mm depth – save £30 and 195kg of CO2
8. Top up loft insulation to 277mm depth and save  £45 and 300kg of CO2

Extra pledges which can’t be measured – but will make a big difference

1. Re-use carrier bags again and again!

2. Grow some veg and compost waste
